Start here: connect your website (Beta)

The plain answers, in order. Read this once and you can be live in about ten minutes.

Beta. In this phase we are inviting workspaces and newsrooms to test our pipeline on their own website, in exchange for honest feedback that helps us improve it. There is no charge during the beta. How to connect your website

How the beta works

The five steps

  1. Sign in with your work emailGo to Sign in and use your organisation email (not Gmail or Yahoo). Your workspace is created for your organisation automatically.
  2. Wait for the beta approvalUntil we switch your workspace on, checks are paused. You will get an email.
  3. Create a website keyIn your workspace, open Website key, type your website address (for example yournewsroom.com) and press Create key. It starts with pk_.
  4. Add one line to your sitePaste this once into your site template, using your own key:
    <script src="https://chatniai.com/widget.js" data-key="pk_YOUR_KEY" defer></script>
On WordPress, install the News Intelligence plugin instead and paste the key into Settings, News Intelligence.
  5. Open your site and try itA small Check a claim button appears on your pages. Select some text, press it, and the verdict and sources appear in a panel on your page.

Your questions, answered

Does the line go in the header or the footer?

Either works, because the line loads after your page and does not slow it down. We suggest the footer, just before the closing </body> tag. Put it in your site template once and it appears on every page. You do not add it page by page.

How does it start working for us?

When a reader opens a page, the line loads the widget. The widget asks our server three things: is this key valid, is your workspace switched on, and is this website on the key's list of addresses. If all three are yes, the button works. If not, the reader sees a polite message instead of a result. Nothing appears on your site until you add the line.

Who can create keys, and where?

The workspace owner and admins. Sign in, open your workspace, and use Website key for the line on your site, or API keys for server keys. You can have up to five active keys of each kind and revoke any of them at once.

What is the difference between a website key and an API key?

Website key (pk_...)API key (pij_live_...)
GoesIn your web page. Safe to be public. On your server only. Never in a web page.
Used forLetting your readers check a claim on your site.Your own developers, scripts and newsroom tools.
Locked toThe website addresses you list.Your workspace.

If you only want the reader button, you need the website key and nothing else.

What if we want to add another website or link later?

Open Website key again. You can list up to ten addresses when you create a key, or create another key for the new website. Then paste the same one line on the new site with that key. Keys cannot yet be edited after they are created, so to change the list, create a new key and revoke the old one. We are making this easier during the beta.

What happens on our website and in our workspace once the line is added?

On your website, readers get the Check button and see verdicts, evidence and sources without leaving your page. In your workspace, every reader check is counted against your allowance and appears in Activity, and claims we cannot settle go to your review queue for your editors. You stay in control: revoke the key and the button stops working immediately.

How do we start using the pipeline for our own work?

Inside your workspace, open the Check tool. Paste a claim or a draft and get the answer. No code is needed. Developers can use the quickstart to connect it to their own tools.

Is it safe?

Yes. The website key is not a secret. It only works on the addresses you listed. Never put an API key in a web page. See Inline checking for what readers see and what we keep.
